United States of Tara "Pilot" Review

Showtime has been pushing the envelope with groundbreaking original series trying to compete with HBO. With Showtime's;"Weeds," "Californication," and "Dexter," all proving to be successful escapes from reality, "United States of Tara" proves to be no different. The show stars Toni Collette playing a mom with multiple personalities. In the pilot, you get to meet three of these personalities including "T" a teenage version of Tara that wears revealing outfits and smokes marijuana. Buck is perhaps the farthest stretch for Toni Collette playing a foul-mouthed trucker that defends her teenage daughter and acts homophobic towards her son's cooking habits.  The characters all compliment each other very well and you kind of want to see them more than the normal Tara. The show is very good in explaining the situation of how her family gets along with their mother's state of mind. John Corbett plays her understanding husband. Toni Collette will without a doubt be in the running for the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Comedy come September. I think "Tara" will grow in the weeks to come and be as successful as "Weeds." The show is written by Diablo Cody who scribed "Juno," and produced by Steven Spielberg. The show looks to be another home run for Showtime.

Black Dynamite Trailer

While Award season is booming with serious films from "Gran Torino" to the emotionally driven "Revolutionary Road." It's hard not to notice one of the funniest movie trailers in recent memory. "Black Dynamite," the tale of cool cat from the 70's stands out as a movie that was meant to become an instant "cult classic," and will have you remembering the lines just from the trailer. Black Dynamite recently premiered at Sundance and was immediately purchased by Sony. Sony hopes that it's movie will be an instant hit and become the beginning of a successful franchise. The movie itself doesn't come out for 8 months but have yourself a taste of "Black Dynamite."

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE REVIEW

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE doesn't sound the like the best idea for a movie, but Danny Boyle brings the city of Mumbai to life in this eagerly engrossing film about love and destiny. Danny Boyle's direction keeps you immediately involved from the beginning. The story is told through the reasoning behinds Jamal's (new-comer Dev Patel) knowledge of the questions he answers on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. Dev Patel portrays Jamal with real emotion and fire that you immediately are rooting for him to succeed. Jamal is driven throughout the film not by money but instead by the love of his childhood sweetheart Latika. The love story never feels forced like other movies in recent memory. You actually believe Jamal and Latika are meant to be together from the first moment the see each other. Danny Boyle has attacked every genre with a new outlook (Comedy- Trainspotting, Horror- 28 Days Later and Science Fiction- Sunshine). With Slumdog Millionaire he takes a love story and makes you believe in destiny and true love. The film does what movies are supposed to do, take you away from your every day reality and makes you leave all your worries at home. Beyond "The Dark Knight," "Slumdog" is the best film of 2008 and deserves all the appraisal and awards its already  received and has yet to win. If you haven't seen it go now, before the cinema is taken over by more garbage like "Bride Wars," and "Paul Blart: Mall Dumbass." Enjoy the cinema and if your going to spend $12 to see a movie in the economy make it worthwhile.

5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW THAT HAPPENED TO TV THIS WEEK

5. FOX Changes Up Network and Programming
Fox has decided to cancel "Prison Break" which just recently aired an episode written by an alum of Cal State Fullerton. Now, I have never seen the show but the premise never seemed like it would be a Law & Order/ CSI type show with multiple spinoffs like " Prison Break: Special Fugitives Unit" or "Prison Break: North Dakota." Also "House" has moved to Monday Night's as a lead in for "24", I like "House" but never get around to watching it. "24" has returned to Fox after a long delay due to the "writer's strike" and "Kiefer Sutherland's D.U.I."

4. After 4 mystery filled seasons "Lost" is back one week from tonight. Hopefully it will answer some questions that need answering. What happened to the people still on the island? Where the hell did the Claire go? How does Ben transport? And can someone finally tell me what that "Black Smoke" is? If you haven't seen the show I would suggest renting it on Netflix or watching it online. The show is very clever and never seizes to amaze it's viewers.  Here's a teaser for Wednesday's Season 5 Premiere.

3. The "Arrested (Greatest Show Ever Written) Development" Movie
is that much closer to becoming a reality. Once Michael Cera agrees, the wheels will be in motion and fans can rejoice at the sight of Will Arnett's GOB finalizing his greatest illusion. (If you look close you can see Phylis from "The Office" sitting next to Michael.

2. "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris hosted SNL last Saturday and performed an ode to his Doogie Howser days. Neil Patrick Harris is one of the most underrated actors on television today. His portrayal of Barney on "HIMYM" is one of the funniest characters since "Kramer" or "Dwight."

1. FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS IS BACK FOR SEASON 2

After a great first season the show has finally come back to HBO after a 15 month hiatus.
The show is very well crafted with a mixture of dry humor and hilarious songs. Here's a clip from season 1 to give you a little taste of Jermaine and Bret.
